Newly-crowned Asian Formula Renault champion and BlackArts Racing driver Joey Alders took his first F3 Asia victory in Friday’s Race 1 at Sepang International Circuit after a strong run from starting at P3. Red Bull Junior Team driver Jack Doohan finished at second place for Pinnacle Motorsport, while Devlin deFrancesco took his maiden podium finish for Absolute Racing and will start in pole position in Sunday’s Race 2 with the fastest race lap.
Reigning champion Ukyo Sasahara clinched pole position in the qualifying session which took place earlier in the day, but with an identical lap time from Zen Motorsport’s James Yu, who started at P2 and Alders at P3.
With Sasahara started the race from the pitlane, Yu had a disastrous start in the opening lap of the race as the lights went out. DeFrancesco’s Absolute Racing teammate Daniel Cao dropped down to sixth position in the race after starting from fourth row of the grid.
BlackArts Racing’s Thomas Luedi, who took the victory in Masters class, and former Formula 2 driver Tatiana Calderon came together when rain drops started fell apart on parts of the track and resulted Calderon’s stranded Seven GP car brought out the safety car.
Hitech GP’s Jake Hughes ended his race with a retirement after eight laps, while Haas F1 Team’s test driver Pietro Fittipaldi had technical issues throughout the race.
The race order was changed on Lap 8 when DeFrancesco lead the race from Alders and Doohan, then relegated to third when both drivers overtook the Canadian-Italian racer for P1 position.
W Series champion Jamie Chadwick finished the race at P7 after qualified at P10 in the race.
